ABOUT US
Southwest Volusia Habitat for
Humanity
is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, Inc., Americus, GA
Southwest Volusia Habitat is a non-profit
organization. We raise needed funds for financing the construction of homes we build for
qualifying families right in our own community. Most of our funds come from the proceeds
of our Thrift Shop. The remainder comes from tax-deductible donations, and our fund-raising events.
People interested in becoming one of our
partnership families must attend one of our monthly orientation
meetings where they can ask questions, learn about the family selection process and
the responsibilities which go along with being accepted as a Habitat family.
The selection of Habitat families is based on
the need for a decent place to live, ability to pay a no-interest bearing mortgage, and
willingness to work 200 hours of "sweat equity" for each family member 18 years or older in partnership with
us as we build them a home.
Applicants must be willing to have us do a
credit check, talk with their references, and visit in their home.
We build simple three bedroom homes with
volunteers doing most of the construction.
A 20-year mortgage is based on the actual
cost of construction.
When we 'pass papers' and
the house is turned over to the Partner family, they must pay a down payment of 1% of the cost of the
house as well as closing costs.
We build homes in Debary,
Deltona, Enterprise, Orange City and Osteen; and we have built over 20 homes
since 1990.
Besides helping to build houses here in our
community, we help people of other countries have a decent place to live through the
tithing of our income. Each quarter we send a tithe to Habitat for Humanity
International in Americus, Georgia.
